PLAYING CARD COLLECTION

These are some of the playing cards I've collected. This page is a work in progress.

My Little Pony Jumbo Playing Cards

These are a little strange and a little disappointing for a few reasons. The first thing I noticed was the packaging, featuring characters from Gen 5, and showing cards with characters from Gen 4. The copyright date on these cards is 2022, and Friendship is Magic ended in 2019, so my best guess is they had leftover cards from when Friendship is Magic was still around that they wanted to get rid of, and figured they'd use characters from Gen 5 to push them. Kind of rude, considering the cards do not feature any Gen 5 characters at all.

The cards themselves feel nice enough, though the large size of them (and any other jumbo cards I've used) make them very cumbersome to shuffle. Very vibrant artwork, and the pip cards have very cute style-appropriate suit designs. The face cards, aces, and jokers feature art of the main characters, though the choice of artwork is confusing. Jokers feature Rainbow Dash by herself, Jacks feature Rainbow Dash, Twilight sparkle, and Pinkie Pie, Queens feature Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, Kings use identical artas the Jacks, and Aces feature all 6 of the main cast. Definitely a missed opportunity to include more characters (Rarity and Applejack are on one card, but Rainbow Dash is on every card? Why?), or even divide the suits into different types of ponies, or different characters. Not a lot of thought or care went into the design, but I guess that's what happens for products sold to little kids.

"It's Time To Retire When..." Playing Cards

I got this deck at a thrift store, held together with a rubber band. A cursory google search seems to show it was originally a set of two decks, and out out by the Ivory Tower Publishing company Inc. in 1988. Whether that date is right for my deck, I'm not sure, as I'm missing the Jokers, but it seems about right. They're nice cards to use, on the smaller side, and easy to shuffle. As the name gives away, each card features a cartoon with a punchline about retiring that a middle aged person in the late 80s would probably find funny (my grandma did when we played cards).

Pizzaville Playing Cards

It was a rainy day in Pizzaville... Pizzaville is apparently a ubiquitous Canadian pizza chain, but coming across these cards was the first I'd ever heard of them. We don't have any where I live so I'm not sure how they ended up in a local thrift store. The cards themselves are completely standard except for the backs. They are also a nightmare to shuffle and feel awful to the touch, sticking to one another and having a "chalky" texture. They aren't dirty, they're just like that. Very unremarkable, except for the two extra included cards promising free side dishes and sodas, expired in 2010. The backs are the same as all the rest, so they could theoretically be incorporated into a game, like as the two additional Jokers needed for Persian Rummy.

Afrique En Creation Playing Cards

A thirft shop find, these cards come from Editions Sepia, a (as far as I can tell) Paris-based book distributor focusing on books relating to Africa, and manufactured by Cartamundi, a Belgian card company. Besides the information on the box, I haven't had much luck finding out anything about these cards. Physically, they feel great. They're small, comfortable cards that shuffle nicely, with illustrations featuring significant African figures. The illustrations give me some pause, but without having any other information, I don't want to jump to assumptions. Being French cards, instead of Aces there are 1's, and the Jacks, Queens, and Kings are Valets, Dames, and Rois, respectively.

Knockoff Cardcaptor Sakura Cards

This is probably my favourite deck of cards that I own, because Cardcaptor Sakura is my favourite magical girl anime, they were a gift from my beloved, and they're just simply very nice cards to play with. Nice to shuffle, and textured but not sticky. They aren't accurate to the actual Clow cards, in terms of size, colour, or proportions, but I feel as functional cards, the more standard size of these cards would work better. And I like the shade of pink :^)

Cat Daze and Dog Daze Playing Cards

Both of these decks were purchased for me by my brother in law. Each suit has its own image of a dog or cat, (e.g. Diamond suited cards get the black cat, Spades get the orange cat, etc.), giving you four unique graphics (five with the Jokers) per deck. The Cat Daze cards are photographs, and the Dog Daze cards are (very cute) illustrations. Functionally, there's nothing to egregious to complain about. They shuffle fine enough, though they are "stickier" than I'd want. for a while, these were the nicest cards I owned. My grandma is very fond of the Dog Daze cards.

Exacter Predictive Maintainence Technologies Playing Cards

If I had a nickel for every time I bought a deck of cards at a thrift shop promoting a company nowhere near me, I'd have two nickels, yadda yadda. Standard cards with a company logo on the back. Nothing at all to say about these except they're nice cards, but I've never played a game with them.

Hello Kitty and Friends Matching Learning Cards

A deck of 36 cards for playing Concentration with. I'm not the biggest fan of Concentration, but they work as intended. The cards themselves are huge, and nearly impossible to shuffle. They're also very flimsy. The artwork is why I wanted them, though, because they feature my boy Hangyodon, who is severely underrespresented compared to his more popular friends. The art is very nice, colourful, and cute, but could definitely use more Hangyodon.

Authentic Casino Played Cards

I have a lot of these. For a while, every time I went to one particular Dollar Tree, I'd get a deck. They are, and especially for the price, exceptionally good feeling and high quality cards. It's nice and convenient to be able to have enough good cards that you're able to leave them anywhere, or throw them in your backpack. It makes sure there's always a deck of cards available. None of the cards I have come from any noteworthy casinos, which I think is funny :^)

Television Trivia Games

I have three of these, from The Office, Friends, and Seinfeld. I've seen Friends and The Office straight through and a good deal of Seinfeld, but I wouldn't consider myself a die-hard fan of any of them. Why do I have these? Just to own junk I'll never use?

Discover Dinosaurs Playing Cards

Dinosaur themed playing cards, with a different dinosaur for each card (even both Jokers have their own dinos!). The cards are fair to shuffle and deal, nothing extraordinary but far, far from being bad. Each card has a unique dinosaur, and a list of stats, such as the etymology of their name, their size, time period, and location. Includes one extra card with information about the people who made them, but the back of this card is different so it can't be used as a third Joker. I don't know much about paleo art, so I can't comment too much, but none of these guys have feathers.

3-D Dino Cards

Another deck of dinosaur-themed cards, but these ones are lenticular. Each card has TWO unique dinosaur illustrations, and the lenticular effect is really quite nice. A little odd feeling to shuffle, but because the lines are horizontal on the cards, you don't notice the texture as much when you're shuffling as you'd expect. The Jokers each feature illustrations of chickens which is very funny. The deck as a whole is very weighty.

Friends Playing Cards

I know I already said I'm not a die-hard fan of Friends, but I do have fond memories watching it multiple times over with both of my parents, and of the three decks of television trivia cards I have, Frends is my favourite despite it being objectively not a very good show. Regardless, these cards are average feeling but very functional. Cards feature an episode title and a photograph from that episode, exceptthe face cards, which feature either publicity photos from the show or illustrations relating to the show (lobsters, Phoebe's taxi, etc.), and a double-sided extra card advertising two seperate Friends versions of Top Trumps.
